Maybe the terms “icy temps” and “frigid cold” don’t apply here in Florida, but it is winter and your skin is probably feeling it. For that reason, I’m dedicating this blog to Tips and Tricks to get through your Winter Skin Woes….

From time to time, I like to switch up my regimen and try out different products. It helps me learn about other skincare lines besides what I use in treatment and I can better recommend products to my patients. I’ve never learned well from reading alone, so I have to get hands on and see, smell, touch, taste (ok, maybe not taste) the products to decide how I feel about them. With that being said, today’s blog is dedicated to hyperpigmentation and Obagi. (more…)
Throughout the course of our lives, we occasionally experience different types of skin problems, depending on our age and genetic background. When we’re younger, we often battle the on-set of acne and oily skin. As we get older, a new set of skin problems develops, including: fine lines and wrinkles, sagging, dryness, rough texture, and hyper-pigmentation. That’s why effective anti-aging skin care treatments (including proper cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing, and protection) are of optimal importance in our daily skin care regimen, regardless of the stage of life we are in. Juvéderm® VOLUMA® XC, replenishes lost skin volume to regain a youthful curve to the cheeks and can be used to enhance the overall shape of your face. Juvéderm® VOLUMA® XC is an injectable hyaluronic acid volumiser that adds fullness to areas that need a little more support or enhancement. Shortly after treatment with Juvéderm® VOLUMA® XC, you should notice that your facial contours appear fuller and rounder, giving your face a softer, more youthful appearance.[styled_box type=”framed” size=”” id=””] U.S. FDA APPROVED JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ XC is the first and only FDA-approved filler to correct age-related volume loss in the midface. Natural-looking results last up to 2 years.
What is Juvederm® VOLUMA™ XC?
New from JUVÉDERM® – JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ XC Addressing the need is JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ XC, the newest facial filler available in the JUVÉDERM® family of hyaluronic acid fillers. The first of its kind, JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ XC is a hyaluronic acid facial filler specifically made to restore age-related volume loss in the mid-face (the cheeks, cheekbones and around the chin). JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ uses hyaluronic acid, a sugar that occurs naturally in your skin, to instantly restore lost facial volume in the cheeks and contour the chin. JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ XC also combines with collagen and elastin to improve skin structure and elasticity, and create a smooth natural look. The results are instant, natural looking and can last up to 2 years. Plus there’s no downtime – most people resume normal activities immediately.
When it comes to enhancing the chin and cheeks, a little volume goes a long way. Thin, tired skin can speak volumes about a person’s age. Signs of aging like sunken cheeks or a sagging chin can add years to a person’s face. These telltale signs of aging can now be addressed with JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ XC. Full cheeks are a key marker of youth. Age-related volume loss can cause the face to lose definition, balance and change shape, all of which can make a person appear older than their years. People age differently: their skin may deflate (lose fullness or volume), descend (droop or sag) or both. However, few people realize the mid-face is one of the first areas to show the signs of aging – as we lose facial volume, cheeks deflate and descend.
JUVÉDERM® is world’s #1 selling dermal filler
Using the latest in volumizing technology, JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ proves that a little volume can go a long way in restoring a more youthful, natural appearance:

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used to improve the look of moderate-to-severe frown lines and wrinklesfor a short period of time (temporary).
While Botox was the first in this class of drugs to be approved by the FDA, newer products such as Xeomin are also available. Each product is a little different, particularly when it comes to dosage units, so they aren’t interchangeable.
Botulinum toxin injections block certain chemical signals from nerves, mostly signals that cause muscles to contract. The most common use of these injections is to temporarily relax the facial muscles that underlie and cause wrinkles, such as:
- Frown lines between the eyebrows
- Crow’s-feet, the lines that fan out from the corners of the eyes
- Forehead furrows, the horizontal lines that form when you raise your eyebrows
In addition to these cosmetic procedures, which simply improve your appearance, botulinum toxin injections have also been used to treat other medical such as:
- Cervical dystonia. In this painful condition, your neck muscles contract involuntarily causing your head to twist or turn into an uncomfortable position.
- Hyperhidrosis. In this condition, excessive sweating occurs even when the temperature isn’t hot and you’re not exercising. In some people, the sweat literally drips off their hands, feet and armpits.
- Chronic migraine. If you experience migraines more than 15 days a month, botulinum toxin injections may help reduce headache frequency.
Botox injections are relatively safe when performed by an experienced doctor. The most common side effects include swelling or bruising at the injection site, headache or flu-like symptoms. If the injections aren’t placed correctly, the medication may spread into adjacent tissues and cause problems such as:
- Eyelid droop
- Cockeyed eyebrows

Low Testosterone is a condition in which the body doesn’t produce enough testosterone, the hormone that plays a key role in masculine growth and development during puberty. Low testosterone (Low T) has become an issue of increased concern among men with recent mass media advertising the advantages of hormone replacement.
- Erectile dysfunction
- Decrease in beard and body hair growth
- Decrease in muscle mass
- Development of breast tissue (gynecomastia)
- Loss of bone mass (osteoporosis)
- Decreased sex drive
- Difficulty concentrating
- Hot flashes
There are two main causes for Low T, primary or secondary. This helps to determine if the cause of Low T is from the testes (primary hypogonadism) or from the hypothalamus/pituitary in the brain (secondary hypogonadism). Either type of hypogonadism may be caused by an inherited (congenital) trait or something that happens later in life (acquired), such as an injury or an infection. Common causes are:
- Hemochromatosis or too much iron in the blood
- Injury to the testicles
- Cancer treatment
- Pituitary disorders
- Inflammatory disease
- Medications such as opiates
- Normal aging
Diagnosis is based on blood tests as well as clinical signs/symptoms. The blood tests should be fasting and in the morning.
Hormone Replacement Therapy
There are many options for Testosterone replacement. They are all effective and all have advantages and disadvantages. The most popular include:
- Injectable Testosterone
- Transdermal Patch/Gel
- Testosterone Pellets
The goal of Testosterone replacement is improvement in a patient’s symptoms not just blood levels. Since many of these are subjective, blood test are performed to assist with overall monitoring and evaluation after 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months.
Contraindications of Hormone Replacement Therapy
- History of Prostate or Breast cancer
- Severe Prostate swelling
- Elevated blood count
- Congestive heart failure
Adverse Reactions to Hormone Replacement Therapy
- Acne, oiliness of skin
- Increased blood count
- Breast enlargement/tenderness
- Testicular atrophy/shrinkage
- Increased risk of prostate cancer
- Aggressiveness or bossiness
- Hair loss
Low T is a growing problem due to an aging population. It is easily diagnosed and can be easily treated but a patient must be aware of the relative risks and benefits associated with treatment. Hormone Replacement Therapy has been proven to be effective in treating Low T with remarkable improvement in a patient’s quality of life.
