A double chin can add years to your profile. If you are bothered by it, you are not alone, according to a survey done by the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) 67% of people are not satisfied with their profile due to a double chin, known in the medical world as submental fullness.
Submental fullness can occur due to several factors such as weight gain, genetics and aging. This area has been undertreated for many years, yet there is now an effective treatment that targets and destroys double chin fat cells. Kybella can help you to achieve a slimmer, more youthful, profile effortlessly.
WHAT IS KYBELLA?
The active ingredient in Kybella is Deoxycholic Acid, a naturally occurring molecule that is in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat.
HOW DOES KYBELLA WORK?
Kybella is injected into the fat beneath your chin. When injected, Kybella causes the destruction of fat cells, and once destroyed, these fat cells can no longer store and accumulate fat.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?
Many patients see results with just one treatment of Kybella. Depending on the submental fullness that you have and the results that you desire to achieve, you may need more than one treatment. Most patients experience desirable results after 2 to 4 treatments of Kybella. In some cases, 6 treatments may be recommended. Once your chin profile is improved, you may not need to be treated with Kybella again.
HOW FAR APART ARE THE TREATMENTS SPACED?
If a series of injections are recommended for your desired results, then the treatments are done one month apart.
IS THERE ANY DOWNTIME?
For most patients, downtime is minimal and most commonly occurs after the first treatment session. The area treated can be swollen for up to three weeks and tender for about a week following treatment. Some redness can occur as well for a few days following the injection.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?
As with other injectable treatments, there can be some side effects experienced. The most common are swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness, and hardness in the treated area. These side effects seem to be more pronounced with the first treatment and subside more quickly, or not occur, with subsequent treatments.
WHAT SHOULD I DO OR EXPECT PRIOR TO TREATMENT?
Prior to treatment you may take an over-the-counter pain reliever. You can ask that the doctor apply a topical anesthetic or inject a local anesthetic to the area to make you more comfortable. Ice/cold packs can be applied to the area prior to treatment as well.
WHAT IS RECOMMENDED AFTER TREATMENT?
Over the counter pain relievers and ice/cold packs applied to the area are recommended after the treatment to relieve any discomfort and swelling.
