Serums penetrate the skin deeper than moisturizers. Serums may be used to brighten skin, banish breakouts, hydrate and/or minimize fine lines. A facial serum can contain up to 70% active ingredients. Serums are developed to block and rebuild the reduction of collagen. When layering products, serums that contain glycolic acid serum may deactivate serums that list vitamin C as an ingredient. Serums should be applied to the skin prior to the application of a moisturizer. Adult acne can be treated with the use of an anti-aging serum. Most serums are water-based. They typically have a shorter shelf life than moisturizers.
The penetrating moisture from a serum helps to regulate sebum production.
